South Africa!
In the summer of 2008 I spent two weeks in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The trip was offered as a Freshman Seminar Abroad program through Michigan State University. We studied the apartheid and the modern day effects on the country, as well as the effect on the citizens. We spent time in schools in both poor and wealthy parts of Cape Town, and were able to compare and contrast the conditions and pedagogies of the schools. We spent time in Townships (shanty towns) outside of the city, and it was one of the most enlightening experiences I have ever had. We also spent a few days of our trip volunteering, cleaning and repainting the roof of an orphanage. South Africa has become a love of mine, and the apartheid is something I am very interested in and would love to engage students in.
